The medical term pressure (IOP) – and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The results showed that moderate exercise performed approximately 15 years is associated with a 25% lower risk of low OPP.
“It seems that the OPP is largely determined by cardiovascular fitness,” said lead author Paul J. Foster, MD PhD, FRCS (Ed), University College London, Institute of Ophthalmology. “We can not comment on the cause, but certainly there is an association between physical inactivity and the factors that increase the risk of glaucoma.”
While there has been a large number of studies that have examined the effect of exercise on interocular pressure (IOP) and blood pressure – the two components of the OPP – this is the first time that the relationship between physical activity and OPP has been investigated, according to the authors.
“Until now, the only modifiable risk factor for glaucoma is IOP, altered by medication, laser surgery,” said Foster. “We believe that our study points to a new way to reduce the risk of glaucoma, by maintaining an active lifestyle. This is one way that people can participate in altering their own risk of glaucoma and other problems serious health. “
