Genital herpes is so personal a health problem that people are very shy to talk about it even with their doctors. This sexually transmitted disease (STD) is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2). It can be easily transmitted from one person to another during sexual intercourse or any kind of body contact. This health problem is very contagious because it can be spread by touching the person who has the virus on the surface of the skin. Genital herpes can also be spread by oral sex. HSV-2 is more common in women compared to men.

Symptoms of genital herpes

The symptoms of genital herpes can be visible specially around lips, genitals and anus. But the virus can be present inside the body even if the herpes symptoms are not visible. It can also be spread even if sores can’t be seen. Genital herpes symptoms look like blisters or ulcers.

Different people can be infected by genital herpes differently. In some cases the outbreak occurs within two weeks after the virus is transmitted. In some cases the symptoms can be seen after months, or even after years. Some people may suffer from painful genital herpes or some people can have painless genital herpes. Fever muscle aches, headache, painful urination, and vaginal discharge are some of the other irritable herpes symptoms.

Genital herpes can’t be fully cured but some medicines are available to treat the outbreaks and lessen symptoms. The two main prescription medicines are Famvir and Valtrex.

Famvir

Famvir is an antiviral medicine which prevents genital herpes from spreading. If taken immediately after the early warning signs appear, this medicine can also suppress the symptoms of herpes. It reduces the duration of suffering also. Famvir gives immediate relief within 24 hours from taking the medicine.

Valtrex

Valtrex is another effective medicine for preventing transmission of the herpes virus. But you should take safe sex measures to reduce that risk. Early diagnosis of herpes is important because it allows you to take Valtrex as soon as the warning signs appear.
