Researchers at the University of Granada and the University of Barcelona have discovered that treatment with messianic acid, a triterpene component extracted from pomade olive skin, inhibits HT29 cell growth of colon cancer treatment. Messianic acid is a natural element capable of inducing apoptosis or programmed death of these cells through mitochondrial intrinsic pathway. For this reason, scientists point to a new natural therapy for the treatment of carcinoma of the colon.

This was the first study to investigate the molecular mechanisms of ant tumor effects and pro-apoptotic messianic acid against colon cancer. The natural chemo preventive agents that are often part of our daily diet can become an effective and inexpensive way to control diseases such as lung cancer treatment. In recent years, there have been many investigations that have proven difficult triterpenes carcinogenesis by intervening in the processes of carcinogen activation, DNA repair, cell cycle arrest, cell differentiation and induction of apoptosis of cancer cells.

The triterpenes are present in a large number of plants used in traditional medicine and are known for their ant tumor properties. Are small messianic acid concentrations in some plants with medicinal properties, but the concentration in wax from olive skin is 80%.

The results of this study may support the use of chemotherapeutic agent messianic acid and cancer chemoprevention.
