Many children in these families appeared to benefit through its close relationship with the patient, which exhibits a lower body mass index would have been expected given their growth curve.

The study shows that overweight women with a traditional diet under medical supervision, such as Atkins and Ornish, lose between 2 and 5 percent of their body weight for 12 months. In the same period of time, both obese men and women in the families of surgery patients lost 3 percent of their total body weight – weight loss, on average, 234 to 226 pounds.

“The families were able to lose weight comparable to being part of a diet under medical supervision, simply accompanying the patient for Bactria surgery visits pre-and post-operative,” said lead author John Morton, MD, MPH , associate professor of surgery at Stanford and director of Bactria surgery at Stanford Hospital & Clinics.

The results will be released on October 17 in the Archives of Surgery. The study’s main author Gavitt Woodard, MD, a 2011 graduate of Stanford Medical School.

The 50 adults and children who participated in the study did more than share a house with Bactria patients, but also, as pointed out by Morton, accompanied the patients to all medical visits pre-and post-operative, where they received diet and lifestyle counseling. These sessions would focus on a high protein, high fiber, low fat diet low in sugar and small, frequent meals. The sessions also set goals for daily exercise and highlighted a night’s sleep, moderation of alcohol and less time watching TV.

After a year, not just family members who are obese lose several kilos, but his waist was also reduced by an average of 47 inches to 44 inches. Weight loss among members of the family does not obese, however, was not significant (180 to 176 pounds), and waist circumference remained stable at an average of 39 inches. However, the number of alcoholic drinks consumed by adult family members, regardless of weight, decreased dramatically, from 11.4 to 0.8 per month.

In addition, body mass index among obese children in the study was lower than expected based on projected growth curve metrics Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
