The streptococcus pneumonia, or pneumococcus, a bacterium that causes many different types of infections in people, ranging from simple ear infections and sinus infections to pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis.
Although the names are similar, S. pneumonia is very different from for example the group A streptococcus (progenies), which is the bacteria that causes strep throat and rheumatic fever, or streptococcus viridians (causing endocarditic)
Pneumococcus is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis and approximately 8% of children with pneumococcal meningitis die from the infection, while 1 in 4 children who survive have permanent neurological damage or hearing loss. It is the most common cause of ear infections and sinus infections, the bacterium is passed from one person to another, usually through droplets from sneezing or coughing and, like viral infections of upper respiratory tract pneumococcal infections are more frequent in winter. The infection may begin as early as 1-3 days after exposure.
There are also some people who are more susceptible to pneumococcal infections than others. A particular group of people who are more likely to be infected are those whose spleen is damaged or surgically removed – either by trauma or disease, because the spleen is the site of removal of encapsulated bacteria. Other people who are susceptible to pneumonia are those with immune system problems, such as HIV / AIDS infected, immune and other debilitating diseases.
There are over 80 different known strains or serotypes “of pneumococcus. Some are more prevalent in different areas, some are more prevalent in children, while others are more common in adults.
